Costs makers often forget

  • Materials used up across a whole batch, not just the visible ingredients
  • Your own labour at an honest hourly rate
  • Packaging: boxes, tissue, tape, thank-you cards
  • Wastage from mistakes, offcuts and rejects
  • Other business costs: software, insurance, listing fees
  • Selling fees and payment processing on each sale
  • Any wholesale discount you plan to offer shops

A simple worked example

A batch of 10 handmade items

If a batch costs about 80 in materials and takes 4 hours at 20 per hour, that is roughly 16 of production cost per item before packaging, wastage and selling fees. A 40% target margin then sets a retail price that covers all of that and leaves your margin after the marketplace takes its cut.
