Costs makers often forget

  • Oils and butters across the whole batch
  • Lye and distilled water
  • Fragrance or essential oils
  • Colour, clays and additives
  • Trimming loss when bars are cut and beveled
  • Failed batches that cannot be sold
  • Wrapping, labels and packaging per bar

A simple worked example

A batch of 20 bars

If a 20-bar batch uses about 40 of oils, lye and fragrance and takes 2 hours to make and unmould, materials plus labour work out at roughly 4 per bar before wrapping and fees. Wastage of a few percent covers trimmings and the occasional reject.
